Outdoor LED Street Lights vs. Old Style HPS Street Lamps

The development of LEDs has led to a significant reduction in blue light and increased light output. In other words, same power that would produce 50lm/W can now produce 130lm/W. Now LEDs have lower blue light to improve visibility. Better visibility provides more safety for pedestrians and drivers at night. The increased visibility means that people can see their surroundings very clearly then less accidents when people walking or driving. In addition, it seems that 4000K color temperature can even produce the same or better visibility, reducing the blue spectrum, even increase the lumen.


The low power consumption requirements of LEDs means low light pullution. LEDs are of beam angle to specially light an area without reflecting into undesired area to cause light pollution. Compared to other light sources, LEDs are of longer lifetime, 50,000hrs, 100,000hrs and even longer.


Nevertheless, compared with other lighting solutions, LEDs are often expensive and the upfront cost is usually high.

The HPS lamp is a certain type of gas discharge lamp. A high pressure sodium lamp works under high pressure inside the lamp. The arc tube of the lamp is composed of aluminum oxide. Sodium metal is mixed with many elements (such as mercury) to balance with yellow light and produce some light blue to white light.


The HPS outdoor street lamps luminous color is yellow, and its color temperature and color rendering index are relatively low only about Ra20. The start-up time of the high-pressure sodium lamp bulb is relatively long, and a certain time interval is required when it is restarted. Normally, it can reach normal brightness for about 5-10 minutes after power on, and it takes more than 5 minutes to restart.


For HPS outdoor street lamps, the utilization rate of the light source is only about 40%, and most of the light must be reflected by the reflector before it can be irradiated into the designated area. And the useful light is about 3,000-5,000 hours.


Conclusion


The lower power and higher lumen output means that the LEDs used in outdoor street lights provide a better cost-effective solution than the old HPS lights used in traditional street lights. Although the initial cost of HPS lamps is lower, the high maintenance cost is still higher than that of LEDs.
